Greenhouse gases (GHG's) are those gases present in our planet's atmosphere. These gases include:- carbon dioxide methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide, ozone and halocarbons, when these gases are released into the atmosphere they act as a blanket and trap the sun’s warmth.
Human action, particularly the burning of fossil fuels (ie: coal, oil and natural gas), land clearing and farming, increase the concentration of these gases or emissions, thus creating the prospect of significant global climate change. This is known as the enhanced greenhouse effect.
Just about everything we do on a daily basis from turning on our lights to driving to work, the consumer goods we purchase directly or indirectly contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect. |
